Discover Ek Balam: The Untouched Mayan Gem

If you’re planning a trip to Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, you’ve probably heard about the famous ruins of Chichén Itzá and Tulum, both of which i have visited. But what if I told you there’s an incredible Mayan site that’s just as breathtaking—without the crowds? And when I say without the crowds I really mean it! When I visited with my girlfriend we were one of 6 visitors. Yes it was in the heat of the afternoon, and it was super HOT! But this place is worth it, and we did hold hands at points and it felt very safe and quite relaxing.

Welcome to Ek Balam, a hidden archaeological treasure where you can climb the ancient pyramids – not something you will be doing in the more popular locations. So if you want to know what it feels like to be on top of one of the Pyramids, like the priests of Mayan times, then come check out Ek Balam.

Whether you’re a history buff, adventure seeker, or just looking for an unforgettable experience, Ek Balam is the perfect off-the-beaten-path destination. So grab your sunscreen and camera—let’s explore this magical Mayan city together!

Why visit Ek Balam?

Unlike more famous ruins in Mexico, Ek Balam is still relatively undiscovered, meaning you can explore it without huge crowds. Plus, it’s one of the few Mayan sites where you can still climb the main pyramid, offering an epic panoramic view of the jungle as far as the eye can see, and it is pretty far!

✔️ Less crowded than Chichén Itzá
✔️ You can climb the Acropolis for amazing views
✔️ Intricately detailed stucco carvings (rare for Mayan sites!)
✔️ A cenote nearby where you can swim after exploring.

If you want to experience Mayan history in a more personal, immersive way, Ek Balam is a must-visit!

We spent around 2 hours at this location looking around and exploring the various sites, all of which are close to each other. Like everywhere there is a Mexican local charge and an international charge, much cheaper than the likes of Chichen Itza. Do take water, elecotrolytes and cover up as always in this area as it is hot.

When you first enter this site you are welcomed by a very beautiful preserved Mayan arch, marking the start of what was once a grand road system connecting it to other cities. You can see I had a great time here.

This site offers up many areas to check out, from the ball court, where the Maya played a sacred ball game called Pok-ta-Pok. Some say the winners (or losers?!) were sacrificed—talk about high stakes!

There is also “The Oval Palace” which is a unique circular structure that was likely used for astronomical observations and royal ceremonies. Unlike most Mayan temples, which are square or rectangular, this one stands out with its curved design!

This is the star of the show—a massive pyramid standing 96 feet (30 meters) tall! Now time to take a break in the shade of the trees before you attempt to climb. Like every Mayan structure the steps are very steep, which will give you a great leg workout. On the way up there are other areas to check out, so don’t rush. And when you get the the top (usually very windy so hold your hats!) you will be amazed at how flat the area is! Coming back down dont forget it is steep so best to climb down in a zigzag motion.

On the way up and views from the top of the pyramid!

Things to know:

  • This took us around 30 min drive from Vallodolid and they offer parking outside of the ruins.
  • Make sure to bring sunscreen, electrolytes, bug spray and share your head!
  • In my opinion not suitable for people in wheelchairs, its a little bumpy!
  • In some ways this is more impressive than Chichen Itza.

If you’re planning a trip to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Valladolid, don’t skip Ek Balam! It’s one of the best-kept secrets of the Mayan world, offering stunning pyramids, rich history, and an unforgettable cenote experience—all without the crowds!
